Considering the fact that I only noticed the newest round of TGRWT just a few days ago I had to come up with a dish quickly. During this round the combination was banana & cloves. I made a banana chutney with yoghurt & chicken inspired by a recipe from Lee Cox from masterchef & Allerhande.

When I came across the recipe of Lee Cox I new I wanted to make a chutney. In his recipe he used allspice and I replaced it by the cloves. I also used red onions because they are a bit sweeter. I liked the sweetness of the banana & red onion together with the distinct flavor of the clove. Although I used a tablespoon, which in my opinion is a lot, it worked for me as a combination. Together with the yoghurt it was a great starter. I can imagine with some rice you can also turn this into a main course.

Ingredients (serves 2)

3 bananas
1 red onion
1 tbsp clovespowder
25 ml white wine vinegar
greek yoghurt
200 gram chickenfilet

Preparation

Fry the diced onion in a pan with some olive oil. After a few minutes add the slices of banana and fry it all until the banana is collapsed. Now it’s time to add some extra flavor. I also used the vinegar and of course the cloves. I used whole cloves and grounded it into powder with my mortar.

After that I fried some chicken and served it together with the chutney and some greek yoghurt.

A few days ago I came across a post on M’s blog about TGRWT. ‘They Go Really Well Together‘ is an event created by Martin and is all about flavour pairs people rarely use. During every edition a single flavour pair is chosen. Other bloggers can participate by creating dishes which contain this pair. TGRWT #2 is hosted by Tara and the flavour pair is banana & parsley.

Of course I have tried to create a dish for TGRWT #2. After some thought I figured out I wanted to make a lasagne. In a recipe from Infonu.nl I saw somebody who used banana & parsley in it’s lasagne. So that convinced me to make a lasagne with banana & parsley.

Ingrediënts (2 persons)
6 sheets of lasagne verdi
2 bananas
3 tomatoes
2 branches of curled parsley
50 gram of butter
30 gram of flower
3 dl of milk
30 gram of Parmigiano Reggiano

First of all chop up the bananas, tomatoes and parsley. Preheat the oven on 225 degrees. Grease a ovenproof dish with some butter. After that I created a béchamel sauce with the butter, flower and milk. After adding some Parmigiano Reggiano it turned into a Mornay sauce. First spread a part of the banana mixture out evenly. Cover this with some sheets of the lasagne verdi. Repeat this procedure and finally cover it with the Mornay sauce. Place it in the middle of the preheated oven and cook it for about 30 minutes until the top has turned golden brown as in the picture below.

The dish was quite nice. Although I used tomatoes and a mornay sauce I found it suprisingly sweet. The flavour of the bananas dominated in this dish. Only a few times I tasted a bit of parsley. This herb added some contrast to the dish, making it less sweet. Next time I will use less bananas and more curled parsley or maybe flat parsley.

(Source recipe: Infonu.nl)

Note: only for this event I will post in English, the blog will remain Dutch

1 el vloeibare boter
2 el rietsuiker
1 zakje vanillesuiker
2 bananen
